intel’s Xeon processors have been created primarily for servers, but have been increasingly appearing on end-consumer computers. This is the case with powerful laptops, heavy-duty desktops, and Apple‘s new Mac Pro, launched at WWDC 2019. With advanced technologies, dozens of cores and high speeds, these chips stand above Intel Core CPUSs .

intel xeon Specifications
intel’s Xeon line is old, 1998, and focuses on a market share that requires high processing capacity, access to more advanced technologies and is willing to pay more for all of this. These chips, other than the Celeron, Pentium or Core chips that can be found more easily, serve datacenters and servers, and so-called workstations, which are heavy-duty machines.
The current models are very different, but it is possible to divide the Xeons into three large groups. There are processors that target mobile workstations (Xeon-E), which appear on powerful laptops like Dell Precision and HP Zbook, and desktops (Xeon-W), as is the case with Mac Pro. In addition, there is the Scalable line , consisting of a large number of Silver, Gold and Platinum versions of chips targeted specifically for servers.
The Xeon-W were recently upgraded by Intel, bringing models such as the Xeon W-3275M. The top-of-the-line CPU adds 28 cores and 56 threads, offering speeds from 2.5GHz to 4.6GHz. It’s the same processor that appears in the most expensive version of the new Mac Pro, for example.
An example of an intermediate Xeon CPU is the W-3245M. With 16 cores and 32 lines of execution, the CPU works between 3.2 and 4.6 GHz and has a technical profile similar to what the consumer finds in Core i of the X line, the most advanced Intel for the domestic consumer. For the Xeon used in laptops, an example is the E-2176M, 12 threads hexa-core and speeds between 2.7 and 4.4 GHz, used by Dell in Precision for sale in the countries
Intel xeon Performance
Considering only the latest Xeon, it is possible to state that the line concentrates some of the fastest processors in the current Intel portfolio. If the user is willing to invest heavily in a new chip, these models should work very well to face any type of task.
However, since they are not end-user processors, they do not usually appear in more conventional performance comparisons with home CPUs. In the Benchmark CPU ranking, for example, you can see the Xeon in privileged positions, especially in the Silver, Gold and Platinum variants, destined for data centers. Processing units of the E-lines, and especially the most current W-series, have not yet been tested and included in the ranking.
Intel xeon Consumption
This high working capacity ends up reflecting the energy expenditure, and the processors heat up a lot. The Xeon-E line, which includes processors for mobile workstations, reaches TDPs between 65 and 95 Watts. To get an idea, processors facing laptops hardly exceed 35 Watts of thermal dissipation.
The Xeon-W line, designed for larger machines – as is the case with the new Mac Pro – delivers more performance and also reaches much higher temperatures. The TDP values of the products range from 160 to 205 Watts.
Currently, AMD contests market with Intel following the workstations, offering the Threadripper processors. The main difference is in price, since the models of the rival cost much less compared to the Xeon. Unlike Intel, which has expanded the line out of servers, AMD has remained in the segment with the Epyc, which use the Zen architecture of the brand’s desktop chips and replace the old Opteron.
By combining many cores and threads at high speeds, the processors work well to meet demanding demands on more intense applications, especially in games. Hence, investing in a Xeon chip for a PC gamer may not be the best choice from a cost-benefit point of view, as it is possible to find cheaper alternatives with sufficient performance levels to play.
This is the case with AMD’s own Threadripper, as well as the recently released third-generation Ryzen. Intel also offers good options, such as the K-series processors with the Core i9 9900K, or the X-line processors, of which the Core i9 9980XE belongs.
Assuming your intention is to build a computer equivalent to Mac Pro, capable of facing heavier professional work, such as video editing and 3D modeling, and run games with very high performance rights, you have to invest a lot. The chip used in the model is the Xeon W-3275M, which is available in the United States market for $ 7,453, approximately $ 28,935 in direct conversion. The most intermediate W-3245M, in turn, leaves for US $ 5,000, something around R $ 19,420.
It may be interesting to think of a computer already set up in the factory, as is the case with iMac Pro. At the lowest configuration, with eight-core Xeon W-2140B, the machine comes out for $ 37,999 at the Apple Store in Brazil. For those who prefer PCs, the Dell Precision 7530 is a 15.6-inch screen laptop that also comes with a Xeon processor. In the cheaper version, bringing the Xeon E-2176M chip, the laptop does not leave for less than $ 21,100 in the official store of the brand.
