apple mac pro 2013

The new Mac Pro has already been announced during WWDC 2019, but the old generation of Apple‘s professional desktop is still available to buy from the official brand store in every country. Although it presents limitations in the cylindrical design, which can disrupt future upgrades, and also in the technologies used, since it is a product of 2013, the previous Mac Pro still has high prices.

The simplest version available on the website of the apple does not leave for less than $ 23,499 and can reach up to $ 52,299, higher value than the price of a zero car. Check out the different options of datasheet, prices and know if still worth investing in Mac Pro 2013.

apple mac pro 2013 Specifications

With a “bin” design, the model can be found in versions with Intel Xeon E5 processors of six, eight or 12 cores. Although it is common to associate these CPUs with high performance, since they are geared towards use in workstations, it is important to remember that these chips already have six years of life in the market. Today, for example, you can find intermediate components that come close to the performance of the 12-core E5.

One of Apple’s big bets with the Mac Pro 2013 was the use of two graphics cards at the same time. Depending on the model and preference settings, you can find the Mac with the FirePro D500 (with 3 GB of dedicated memory) or a pair of the faster FirePro D700 (6 GB of RAM). The fact that the FirePro line was abandoned by AMD a few years ago gives an idea of how much these graphics processors have aged. By comparing computing performance, the D500 is close to something like the Radeon RX 570, AMD’s entry-level video card currently.

Regarding RAM, the Mac Pro runs with DDR3, the oldest memory standard, and is offered by Apple with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. In storage, in turn, the computer can be purchased with 256 GB, 512 GB or a 1 TB of PCIe SSD.

Performance

As the listing of specifications already advances, the Mac Pro was losing its breath over the years. Testing with the Mac Mini with Core i7, released in 2018, shows that Apple’s highest-priced home desktop can even match Mac Pro’s performance with a six-core chip.

Features and upgrades

The Mac Pro came up with an innovative design that, if it was not unanimous, at least hit a crucial point. Developed to boost cooling, the cylinder formed a computer that to this day is praised for efficiency in appearance, even bringing powerful components and high consumption.

This format, however, is negative at another point. The compact construction and high level of customization of the hardware, for example, the two graphics processor system, has generated a desktop computer with very low level of upgrades. Therefore, the only piece that the user can effectively switch is the SSD.

Apple itself admitted in 2017 that the concept eventually caused problems that made component upgrades difficult. This should explain why the cylindrical Mac Pro has not been updated in all those years.

Another factor to consider is that this version is somewhat restrictive in terms of interfaces. Thunderbolt 3, for example, does not appear on the machine, which still uses Thunderbolt 2 and HDMI output in standard 1.4b, which means that 4K screens are not supported in 60 Hz. And USB-C ports, which have become central in Apple products are not present on the desktop either.

You also have to consider macOS support. Although Apple has the habit of loading its hardware for many years with each revision of the operating system, it is inevitable that at some point the Mac Pro will be left behind in new editions, which can greatly reduce its viability as a workstation.

On the one hand, the performance of the Mac Pro still impresses: it is a 2013 computer that achieves performance equivalent to an intermediate PC that you can mount today. Despite this, this performance may be far from ideal and what your target audience expects, especially for the price charged on the model. Another point is that there are better-performing iMacs and more advanced components available at the moment.

The cheapest version of the machine, with six-core Xeon processor, 16GB RAM and two FirePro D500, appears for $ 23,499 at the official Apple Store. It is worth remembering that the value does not consider costs with monitor, mouse and keyboard. For the same price, it’s possible to invest in a current MacBook Pro, or else consider a powerful PC, entitled to Threadripper processors with double the cores and entitlement to incremental component upgrades.

In the more fussy configuration, the Mac Pro will cost much more. With the 12-core Xeon E5, two FirePro D500, 64 GB of memory and 1 TB of SSD, the Apple computer leaves for $ 52,299 in the official store.
